DIY Guide: How to Clear a Blocked Drain Safely

Most Sydney Drain Blockages Can Be Cleared in Under 15 Minutes

A blocked drain is one of the most common plumbing problems in Sydney homes. Before you call a plumber, there are several safe methods you can try to clear a minor blockage yourself — most kitchen and bathroom blockages can be shifted in under fifteen minutes with tools you already have around the house.

This guide walks through the most effective DIY drain clearing techniques, the order to try them in, and — just as importantly — when to stop and call a licensed professional before you make things worse. It’s written from the perspective of a Sydney plumber who clears these blockages every day, not a hardware store selling chemicals.

Before You Start — Assess the Situation

The first step is working out whether this is a blockage you can safely tackle at home. Not every blocked drain is a DIY job, and the wrong approach on the wrong type of blockage can turn a $300 service call into a $3,000 repair.

✓ You Can Try DIY If
  • The water is draining slowly but has not stopped completely
  • Only one fixture is affected (a single sink, shower, or basin)
  • There is no sewage odour or overflow
  • The blockage is likely caused by hair, soap, grease, or food debris in an accessible drain
⚠ Call a Licensed Plumber Immediately If
  • Multiple fixtures are draining slowly or not at all
  • Sewage or wastewater is overflowing from drains, toilets, or gully traps
  • You can smell sewer gas inside or outside your property
  • Water is backing up from floor drains or inspection openings
  • The blockage keeps returning within days or weeks

If any of those red-column items apply, the blockage is almost certainly in the main sewer line or a deeper section of the drainage system — and attempting DIY on these blockages risks making the problem significantly worse. Call Proximity Plumbing on 0420 102 394 for a $0 call-out assessment.

5 DIY Methods to Clear a Blocked Drain

Try these methods in order — the first three resolve most household blockages. If you reach Method 5 without success, it’s time to call a professional.

Method 1 of 5
1

Boiling Water

Best for: kitchen sink blockages caused by grease and fat build-up.

Boil a full kettle of water and pour it directly down the drain in two or three stages, allowing each pour to work for a few seconds before adding the next. The heat melts solidified grease deposits and can shift minor blockages.

This method works best for kitchen drains and is most effective when the water is still draining, just slowly.

⚠ Caution

Do not use boiling water on PVC pipes if you are unsure of your pipe material — the heat can soften PVC joints over time. If you have older pipes, use hot (not boiling) water from the tap instead.

Method 2 of 5
2

The Plunger

Best for: sinks, showers, and toilets — the most effective DIY tool for most household blockages.

Use a cup plunger for flat drains (sinks, showers, bathtubs) and a flange plunger for toilets.

  1. Remove the drain cover or plug.
  2. Fill the basin, sink, or toilet bowl with enough water to cover the rubber cup of the plunger.
  3. Place the plunger directly over the drain opening and ensure you have a tight seal.
  4. Plunge firmly and consistently — 15 to 20 strong pushes.
  5. Pull the plunger away sharply to break the seal and check if the water drains.

If the water drains freely, run hot water for two to three minutes to flush any remaining debris. If the blockage has not shifted after two or three rounds of plunging, move to the next method or call a professional.

Tip

For double kitchen sinks, block the second drain opening with a wet cloth while plunging the blocked side. This concentrates the pressure on the blockage rather than allowing it to escape through the other drain.

Method 3 of 5
3

Bicarbonate of Soda & White Vinegar

Best for: bathroom drains blocked by hair and soap scum, and kitchen drains with grease build-up.

  1. Pour half a cup of bicarbonate of soda (baking soda) directly into the drain.
  2. Follow with half a cup of white vinegar. The mixture will fizz — this reaction helps break down organic build-up.
  3. Cover the drain opening with a wet cloth and leave for 30 minutes.
  4. Flush with hot water for two to three minutes.

For stubborn build-up, repeat the process or leave overnight before flushing.

Note

Safe for all pipe types and will not damage your plumbing. A much safer alternative to chemical drain cleaners.

Method 4 of 5
4

The Wire Coat Hanger (Manual Extraction)

Best for: shower and bathroom drains blocked by visible or near-surface hair.

  1. Straighten a wire coat hanger, leaving a small hook at one end.
  2. Remove the drain cover.
  3. Insert the hook end into the drain and gently fish out hair and debris.
  4. Avoid pushing the blockage further into the pipe — the goal is to pull material out, not push it down.
  5. Once you have removed as much debris as possible, flush with hot water.

This method is only suitable for surface-level blockages within the first 10 to 15 centimetres of the drain. If you cannot reach the blockage, you need professional equipment.

Method 5 of 5
5

Wet and Dry Vacuum

Best for: sinks and floor drains where a solid object has been dropped down.

  1. Set the vacuum to wet mode.
  2. Create a tight seal over the drain opening using the vacuum hose.
  3. Turn the vacuum on at maximum power — the suction can dislodge and extract blockages that plunging cannot shift.

Works particularly well for blockages caused by solid objects accidentally dropped down the drain (hair clips, small toys, jewellery), where suction is more likely to retrieve the item intact than pushing it deeper with pressure.

What NOT to Do When Clearing a Blocked Drain

Knowing what to avoid is just as important as knowing what to try. Each of these is a common DIY mistake that costs Sydney homeowners more than the original blockage would have.

Don’t Use Chemical Drain Cleaners

Most off-the-shelf drain cleaning products from supermarkets and hardware stores contain acid-based or caustic formulations marketed as drain unblockers. These products rarely resolve actual blockages and can corrode the metal components of your drainage system — particularly older pipes made from cast iron, copper, or galvanised steel. They can also damage PVC pipe joints over time. If a plunger and boiling water do not work, chemical drain cleaners are unlikely to help and may create a more expensive repair.

Don’t Use a Garden Hose to Force Water Through

Without the right nozzle and pressure control, you risk flooding the area around the drain or forcing the blockage deeper into the pipe. Professional high-pressure jet blasting uses specialised nozzles and controlled pressure — a garden hose does not replicate this.

Don’t Disassemble P-Traps Unless You Know How

Do not attempt to disassemble P-traps or pipe fittings unless you are confident in reassembling them. Incorrectly reassembled fittings can leak and cause water damage that costs significantly more than the original blockage.

Don’t Ignore a Recurring Blockage

Recurring blockages — even if you can clear them temporarily — indicate a deeper issue such as tree root intrusion, a cracked pipe, or a build-up that requires professional CCTV drain inspection to diagnose properly.

When DIY Will Not Work — and What Happens Next

If you have tried the methods above and the drain is still blocked, or if the blockage returns within a few days, the problem is deeper than surface-level. The most common causes of persistent blocked drains in Sydney include:

  • Tree root intrusion into ageing clay and earthenware pipes
  • Collapsed or cracked pipe sections
  • Heavy grease accumulation deeper in the pipe system
  • Blockages in the main sewer line rather than an individual fixture

These issues require professional diagnosis and clearing using CCTV drain cameras, hydro-jetting equipment, and specialist drain clearing tools that DIY methods simply cannot replicate. A licensed plumber can locate the exact position and cause of the blockage, clear it properly, and advise whether further repair — such as pipe relining — is needed to prevent the problem from returning.

Proximity Plumbing offers a $0 call-out fee across Sydney, so there is no cost to have a licensed plumber assess your drains and provide an upfront fixed-price quote before any work begins.

How to Prevent Blocked Drains

Once your drain is clear, these habits will help keep it that way.

🍳

In the Kitchen

  • Never pour grease, fat, or cooking oil down the drain — let it cool and dispose of it in the bin
  • Use a sink strainer to catch food debris
  • Run hot water through the drain for 30 seconds after washing up to flush residual grease
🚿

In the Bathroom

  • Install drain screens in showers and bathtubs to catch hair
  • Clean drain screens weekly
  • Use the bicarbonate of soda and vinegar method monthly as a preventative measure
🌳

Outdoors

  • Keep stormwater drain grates clear of leaves and garden debris, particularly before heavy rain
  • Trim tree roots near known drainage lines
  • Schedule a professional drain inspection every 6 to 12 months if you have mature trees near drainage

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Drano or similar products to clear a blocked drain?

We do not recommend chemical drain cleaners. Most contain acid-based or caustic formulations that can corrode older pipes and damage PVC joints without effectively clearing the blockage. A plunger, boiling water, or bicarbonate of soda and vinegar are safer and often more effective alternatives for minor blockages. If those don’t work, a professional clear with proper equipment is the right next step — chemical cleaners poured on top of a real blockage often just create a hazardous mix the plumber then has to deal with.

Does baking soda and vinegar really unclog drains?

Yes — for minor organic blockages caused by hair, soap scum, or light grease, the bicarbonate of soda and vinegar method is genuinely effective. The fizzing reaction loosens organic build-up on pipe walls, and a hot water flush carries it away. It will not, however, clear a fully blocked pipe, a tree root intrusion, or a collapsed section of drainage. As a monthly preventative measure on bathroom and kitchen drains it’s hard to beat.

How do I clear a blocked drain outside?

Outdoor and stormwater drain blockages are usually caused by leaves, debris, and tree roots. Remove visible debris from the drain grate first. If the blockage is below the grate, it likely requires professional hydro-jetting to clear — outdoor drainage runs are typically too long for DIY methods to reach. Call a licensed plumber for outdoor drain blockages, particularly before storm season.

Why does my drain keep getting blocked?

Recurring blockages almost always indicate a structural issue rather than a behavioural one. The most common causes in Sydney homes are tree root intrusion through cracked or aged clay pipe joints, sections of pipe that have partially collapsed or sagged, a build-up of grease and scale that’s accumulated over years, and incorrect pipe falls that cause water to pool. A CCTV drain inspection is the only reliable way to diagnose which one applies to your property.

How often should I have my drains professionally inspected?

We recommend a professional CCTV drain inspection every 6 to 12 months, particularly for properties with mature trees near drainage lines, older clay or earthenware pipes, or a history of recurring blockages. Proximity Plumbing offers a $0 call-out fee — book a preventative inspection rather than waiting for the next emergency.

When should I call a plumber instead of trying DIY?

Call a licensed plumber immediately if multiple fixtures are draining slowly at the same time, sewage is overflowing from drains or gully traps, you can smell sewer gas, water is backing up from floor drains, or the same blockage has returned within a few days of being cleared. These all point to a main sewer line or structural issue that DIY methods cannot fix and may make worse.
